Tag, tag, tag

Februarie 17, 2008

He cooked his six rashers of bacon and two eggs, frying a piece of bread in the fat and eating it from the plate on his knees, his chair pulled up in front of Beckeleg’s fire, for the day was cold, with more bitter weather forecast. While eating, Naldo thought of all that had happened during the night, form the moment he left the shop to the point of arrival in Cornwall. Naldo could not understand Maitland-Wood’s naivete over the question of his four identities – five including his real one.

More BIB.

“It was the same wind. The wind that had tugged at Taylor’s frozen body and drove the rain against the blackened walls of Blackfrairs Road, the wind that flails the grass of Port Meadow now ran headlong against the shutters of the farmhouse. The farmhouse smelt of cats. There were no carpets. The floors were of stone: nothing would dry them. Johnson lit the tiled oven in the hall as soon as they arrived but the damp still lay on the flagstones, collecting in the dips like a tired army. They never saw a cat all the time they were there, but they smelt them in every room. Johnson left corned beef on the doorstep: it was gone in ten minutes.”
